Dr. Joel, Private Tutor

I hold a doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Nottingham and have been teaching and tutoring since 2017, after several years in scientific research. I teach Chemistry, Biology, and Physics from Key Stage 3 to GCSE/IGCSE, and Chemistry and Biology at A-level. I have also prepared students for Common Entrance and Scholarship exams to top independent schools.

Professional high quality tuition, mentoring, and study skills for today’s learners.

I have worked with learners of all abilities, including those with special educational needs, tailoring lessons to be clear, supportive, and effective. With experience teaching both online and in person, and as an exam marker for two major UK exam boards, I understand how to turn knowledge into exam success. My focus is on building confidence, sharpening exam technique, and helping every student achieve their full potential.

My Teaching Ethos

What is metacognition?

Metacognition describes the processes involved when learners plan, monitor, evaluate and make changes to their own learning behaviours.

2025 Key Curriculum Changes in Maths & Science – What You Need to Know

Maths

  • More depth, less overload: The new curriculum reduces content volume so pupils can spend more time truly understanding core maths ideas such as algebra, number sense, proportional reasoning, graphs and problem-solving.
  • Greater focus on reasoning: Students will be expected to explain methods, justify steps and apply maths to unfamiliar situations — not just follow set procedures.
  • More real-world maths: Expect stronger emphasis on data handling, modelling, estimation and everyday numeracy, preparing pupils for financial literacy and practical decision-making.
  • Earlier foundations matter more: Strong Key Stage 3 skills (fractions, percentages, algebra basics) will be more essential than ever for success at GCSE under the revised curriculum.
  • GCSE Maths exam load reduced: The overall assessment burden will drop by around 10%, aiming to make exams more focused and less repetitive.

Science

  • Triple Science becomes standard: All schools will be required to offer separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSEs, giving students clearer subject progression and stronger foundations for A-level.
  • Less content, stronger understanding: Scientific ideas will be taught with more depth, meaning pupils will need to understand why processes happen, not just memorise definitions.
  • More emphasis on scientific thinking: Skills such as analysing data, evaluating evidence, interpreting graphs and designing investigations will be strengthened across the curriculum.
  • Better continuity from KS3 to GCSE: The new structure aims to fix gaps between Year 8/9 foundational knowledge and GCSE topics — a common source of difficulty for many students.
  • Improved clarity for practical skills: Practical science expectations will be simplified and better integrated into written exams to reflect real lab-based understanding.
  • Reduced exam pressure: Like maths, science GCSE exams will be slightly shorter and more focused.

What This Means for Your Child

Expect curriculum draft changes to appear from 2027, with full teaching from September 2028.

Students will need strong core understanding, not just revision-style memorisation.

Maths and science tutoring will increasingly focus on reasoning, explanation and multi-step problem solving.

Early preparation (Years 7–9) will have a greater impact on later GCSE success.

Pupils aiming for top independent schools or STEM pathways will benefit from getting used to deeper analysis and scientific literacy now.

Applied Science in Practice

Rainbow fizz using universal indicator

The ‘rainbow fizz’ is an extraordinary acid–base practical that gives students direct insight into indicators and neutralisation. As the fizzing subsides, the large tube displays a full spectrum of colours – from purple at the bottom through to red at the top. Depending on how much mixing takes place, a little more ethanoic acid may be added to bring out the red at the top. Beyond being visually striking, this experiment shows students how theory translates into real results. It captures their imagination, makes learning memorable, and helps them truly understand the chemistry behind neutralisation.”

DNA Extraction from fruit

All living things contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the molecule that carries the instructions for making thousands of different proteins essential for survival. When collected from thousands of cells, DNA can even be seen with the naked eye. Through this simple experiment, students experience science in action — extracting DNA with everyday materials in their own kitchen. It’s a powerful way to bring theory to life, build curiosity, and deepen understanding beyond the classroom.

Collapsing Can Experiment

This experiment demonstrates the strength of air pressure by crushing an ordinary drinks can through the creation of a temporary vacuum inside. Simple yet dramatic, it’s the kind of hands-on activity that captures students’ attention and turns abstract scientific principles into something they can see and remember. Experiments like this help build curiosity, reinforce understanding, and show how science connects to the real world.

What my clients are saying

Efychia, Parent

“Joel has been tutoring my daughter in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Joel is an excellent tutor, he is professional, reliable and explains everything thoroughly. My daughter has made a big improvement in all three subjects and achieved great results at her end of the year exams. I would recommend Joel without any hesitation.”

Paul, Parent

“Joel has been working with my son while he has taken a break from school, and the difference has been outstanding. His lessons are interactive and carefully explained step by step, which makes even the hardest topics manageable. Joel sets homework that reinforces what has been learned, and he always keeps me informed about progress and areas to focus on at home. My son has grown in confidence, enjoys his science sessions, and is now ready to return to school with a much stronger foundation.”

Julia, Parent

“Joel is reliable, conscientious and kind. He shows genuine concern for my children and their needs. I have noticed Joel is responsible and very dedicated, as my children love to do private lessons with him as they now have a better understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. He has also provided homework so they can apply what they have learned. His science classes are well prepared, informative, developmentally, appropriate and very enjoyable. Clearly he is doing a great work with my children as they have become top students in science and they have an affinity for this course.”

Weiya, Parent

“My daughter has special educational needs and has often struggled in larger classroom settings. Joel’s patient and thoughtful approach has made a real difference. He adapts the lessons to her pace, uses hands-on examples to bring the subjects to life, and never moves on until she fully understands. She now feels confident in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and for the first time actually looks forward to her lessons. It has been wonderful to see her grow in both knowledge and self-belief.”

Musa, Parent

“My son has done amazingly well in his exams this year, and we couldn’t have done it without Joel’s help. He achieved grade 9s across all three sciences at GCSE, which is an incredible result. Joel’s teaching, encouragement and dedication have made a real difference — thank you so much for all your support.”

Rajini, Parent

“When we started homeschooling, I was worried about how to keep my son motivated and on track with science. Joel has been an incredible help — his classes are structured, engaging and tailored exactly to what my son needs. He explains concepts clearly, provides homework to apply the learning, and takes time to update us as parents after each session. Thanks to Joel’s support, my son not only understands Biology, Chemistry and Physics better, but also enjoys the subjects and has made excellent progress.”
